Refurbishment & Alterations of a Mews House
This Mews house is located very close to Hyde Park and near the Victoria and Albert Museum.
Our involvement in the project began after the building had been completely gutted, in the midst of construction of a steel frame and joists to support the first floor.
Even though construction had already started we drastically revised the design that was in place.
We convinced our client that it wasn’t practical nor possible to have six cars parked inside the living room at ground floor level. After several such obstacles had been cleared, we still had to work our way around the steel frame.
The building covers the entire property, thus lacking any access to a courtyard or light well.
This posed additional challenges such as allowing natural light into the rear of the building without overlooking the neighbours. This was solved by introducing rooflights
above the dining area, the master bedroom and along the rear of the main roof.
Energy efficiency of the house was vastly improved through loft insulation, windows and doors being replaced, a high efficiency condensing boiler, pipe insulation and thermostatic valves on radiators.
A 55m2 increase in gross internal area was achieved by adding the new mezzanine and the new first floor that was built within the volume of the existing rear extension.
The alterations turned a long unused, dark and dank Mews house into a bright and spacious home, befitting its location in a posh area.
